GITE DANS LE LOT
department of the Lot is full of history, where life is relaxed, enjoyable,
and far from the madding crowd. Gignac is a delightful old French village
set in wonderful countryside between the medieval towns of Souillac and
Sarlat le Caneda. It is, of course, surrounded by many medieval towns
and villages, such as Martel and Salignac. The beautiful lake at Lissac
is not far away, where you can water ski, swim and dive, or just laze
around the lake with a picnic.
You can travel to the centre of the earth in the spectacular caves of Lascaux with its famous prehistoric paintings, or visit the magnificent gardens at Erignac. The picturesque and ancient city of Brive is only 20 kilometres away.
itself has all the usual French amenities, bakery, butcher, restaurant,
bar and a small supermarket. Open air markets are held regularly, as
they are in most of the villages. Souillac’s market is on Friday
mornings, Martel’s one is on Wednesday and Saturday morning. Sarlat
has a very colourful and lively market on Saturday mornings.
Canoening on the nearby river Dordogne is a very popular and enjoyable experience, there are vineyards, golf courses, tennis courts, walnut orchards, cycling and so much more to see and do in this beautiful area.
And, of course, the Lot is famous for its gastronomic delights – foie gras, magret de canard ( duck breast), walnuts, wine and goats cheese are just some of them. There are a number of excellent, reasonably priced restaurants within easy reach of the the house if you wish to go further than Gignac itself, and, if you prefer to eat al fresco round the pool, Gignac’s shops are full of fresh local produce.
